The Tacoma Youth Marine Center
is a youth-oriented facility on the Thea Foss Waterway providing
a safe place for training youth about boating and our local marine environment
- a place where our youth can touch the Sound.
It is the mission of the Tacoma
Youth Marine Center to provide an opportunity for all youth of Tacoma/Pierce
County to experience quality maritime skills training that also teaches
solid values, effective leadership and teamwork, and concern of the environment.
The Tacoma Youth Marine Center (TYMC) provides a place for marine-related
training programs for young men and women. It is a place to develop skills
and confidence through training in leadership, citizenship, and personal
fitness that instills strength of character and positive life values.
This will take place in a safe, drug free environment that teaches youth:
- Life skills
- Problem solving
The skills through which
personal and team success is achieved.
TYMC has the capacity to serve
thousands of youth each year, providing a cluster of programs including intensive
navigation, safe boating, small engine repair, diesel mechanics, fiberglass repair and other related maritime skills.
Tacoma Youth Marine Center (TYMC) has developed a business plan that provides for the facility to be self-sustaining through the continued operation of the Tacoma Fuel Dock and the Commencement Bay Marine Services, two corporations whose profits go directly to support the TYMC. The sustainability of the facility depends in large part on a long-term, minimal cost lease for the land and the facility. The buildings and dock are maintained and professionally managed through the profits generated by the businesses, thus reducing the cost for the youth programs using TYMC. The TYMC, will supplement the donations of the Tacoma Fuel Dock and Commencement Bay Marine Services through private donations, public grants and minimal program fees.
Substantial improvements to the facility are planned in order to create a safe and useful environment for training. To fund the remodeling, TYMC is conducting a capital campaign to seek the support of individuals, foundations, governmental agencies and corporations. Local businesses, the boating community, the Port of Tacoma, the city of Tacoma, and Pierce County all stand to gain substantially from their investments in TYMC. The programs are self-funding and produce trained young persons engaged in positive activities, and who become assets to the local communities. The result of the programs will be our future community-conscious citizens, workers, union members, and leaders of tomorrow who will use the water resources of our area wisely.
